Common house borer, the most widespread borer in New Zealand homes, leaves small round holes about 2 to 4mm across, while larger oval holes up to 7mm usually mean the native two toothed longhorn.
Fresh flight holes have clean, sharp edges, and new piles of fine dust below them mean the larvae are still feeding.
Start your check under the floor and on the coolest, dampest side of the house. A few holes in an old chair can be a DIY job, but holes in floorboards, subfloor or roof timbers need a proper survey, because what you can see is rarely the whole story.
