Silverfish can live for years, while carpet beetle larvae can hide for months in dark, undisturbed places. By the time you notice the damage, they've often been there for a while.
Seeing a carpet beetle doesn't necessarily mean the adult insect is the problem. It's the larvae — small, hairy grubs that hide in carpets, wardrobes, under furniture and other quiet areas — that feed on natural fibres.
They can damage wool carpets, clothing, upholstery, rugs and other fabrics. Silverfish are a different pest, but they cause their own headaches, feeding on materials containing starch, glue and cellulose.
Books, wallpaper, cardboard and stored fabrics can all become food sources.

How do I know if I have carpet beetles?
Look for small holes in woollen clothing, carpets, rugs and upholstery, as well as shed larval skins or small beetles around windows and light sources.
